I read the thread on the lawsuit wrt CMA in BC, etc. and I thought it might be interesting to those who read things here to note the following:

I started competitive chess here in Canada, excluding a couple of events at UVic run by Len Molden at the University chess club, back in the fall of 1992 or thereabouts. For whatever reason, I didn't exactly get a warm welcome. However, one person "befriended" me. ha ha.

It turns out that my friend (Carl Grant) was on everyone's "sh*t list" for some legal action he took. Basically, he took the Winnipeg club to Small Claims Court, and won, over the matter of the prize fund. The event in question had been shortened by one round, due to extreme weather, and Carl was in the lead after a shortened event. Or something like that; a Winnipeg player who remembers differently can correct me with any errors here.

Anyway, Carl won, got the prize money he wanted, and everyone was mad at him for taking the club to court. And this was my new friend. ha ha.
